São Paulo, Brazil — The American Cancer Society held a Patient Navigator training in São Paulo, Brazil from April 11-12. The training included 25 participants from cancer NGOs from throughout Brazil. Among the participants were navigators and staff from the American Cancer Society-supported Patient Navigator Programs of the Instituto Oncoguia and IMAMA, as well as representatives from 15 other leading cancer patient services NGOs from every region of the country.
The training was led by Angelina Esparza, Director, American Cancer Society Health Equity; Rian Rodriguez, Director, ACS Patient Navigator Program; Patricia Valverde, Director, Colorado Patient Navigator Training Program: Adriana Bacci, Manager, ACS Brazil Breast Cancer Action Program; and Gustavo Azenha, Lead Manager, American Cancer Society’s Global Health Department.
The American Cancer Society Latin American Patient Navigator Program aims to address cancer disparities by attending to the information and resource needs of cancer patients and caregivers from low-income communities. The Program is one element in the Society’s broader efforts in the region to promote more equitable access to and quality of care.
Participants learned about development and implementation of both, outreach navigator and hospital-based navigator programs. In addition, participants received instruction on working effectively with patients, including identifying and addressing health barriers; health communications; health behavior change; patient education/empowerment; patient empowerment; and community outreach.
Participants were given solid foundation for developing impactful Patient Navigator programs with clear goals and strategies, which will prove indispensable to strengthening existing patient services initiatives in Brazil, helping to make them more patient-centered, evidence-based, and impactful.

I never have played a joke on any of my panettis, but I did have a patient with 5mm of recession on #6 that miraculously healed itself! We thought that maybe he had a gingival graft because he had no recession what so ever. When we asked if he saw a periodontist, he replied, No, I just stopped using Listerine and drinking orange juice. We didn't believe him at first, but now we call him our miracle patient!
