Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The “First World Summit on Women’s Cancer” opened Thursday September 1 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Africa in Ethiopia’s capital city.  A three-person delegation from the American Cancer Society (ACS)  joined African Ministers of Health, African political leaders, international organizations, medical professionals, and academics, with the goal of building an African strategy to position women’s cancer on the global health agenda.  

 ACS Program Manager Kiti Kajana with ACS Volunteer Haskell Ward and ACS Managing Director Ann McMikel with ACS Global Cancer Ambassador Wondu Bekele. Mr. Bekale. Their participation in this week's meeting reinforces ACS' on-going support for women by developing advocacy and capacity-building in low- and middle-income countries.

Led by the Princess Nikky Breast Cancer Foundation, organizers aim to generate political and financial support for prevention and control of breast and cervical in Africa. The two-day gathering advances the U.N. High-level Meeting on Non-communicable Disease (NCDs) September 19- 20 in New York.  The meeting complements long-term U.N. initiatives to improve the health and lives of girls and women worldwide.

Rising cancer rates among women in low- and middle-income countries is a result of the lack of access to information about cancer, prevention, early detection, testing, and treatment. ACS recognizes that although our understanding of cancer and how to intervene is unprecedented, cancer continues to be a leading cause of death largely because of lack of application of known interventions. A comprehensive response that promotes prevention, early detection, and treatment is critical to saving lives and alleviating needless suffering, and will help reduce the cancer burden for women, their families, and children.
