UN Modalities Resolution for September 19-20 2011 Noncommunicable Disease Meeting Passes

New York, New York - On December 23, 2010, the United Nations passed a critical resolution calling for the best possible format, structure, and length for the first UN High-level Meeting on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).  ACS worked with the NCD Alliance, Livestrong, partners around the world, and UN Missions to support negotiations on the Resolution calling for a substantive first-ever UN High-level Meeting on NCDs. The UN Modalities Resolution states that the High-level NCD Meeting of the General Assembly will be held September 19-20, 2011, in New York City. The opening session will feature statements by the president of the UN General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Director-General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan. The meeting will include three roundtables and will "address the prevention and control of NCDs worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly in developing countries." UN Member States are encouraged to be represented at the Head of State level. The closing plenary session will include roundtable deliberations and adoption of an outcome document. The UN will hold a civil society hearing, and also engage both global leaders and the media, in the months leading up to the September meeting.
