American Cancer Society Helps Build the Case for Healthy Public Policies on Noncommunicable Diseases in Africa

From July 30-August 1 in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, the American Cancer Society participated in a first-ever meeting of African government health officials and representatives of health organizations and institutions from around the world to address public policies on noncommunicable diseases in Africa. The International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) organized the meeting, with the purpose of creating a foundation of understanding for how an integrated health promotion approach can be used to make a real contribution to noncommunicable disease prevention and control on the continent. Participants included government officials from nine African countries and organizations such as the World Health Organization and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Attendees shared existing examples of projects, guidelines, and approaches in Africa related to noncommunicable disease, and described how these experiences could be used to identify advocacy strategies and tools to address noncommunicable disease using a health promotion approach. The American Cancer Society was the only disease-specific organization in attendance at the meeting. The American Cancer Society also joined a smaller preliminary meeting of key regional partners, including individual cardiologists, who shared ideas, plans, and concerns regarding noncommunicable diseases in their countries.
