On July 23, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates pledged $375 million to fight the global tobacco pandemic, which will be added to the $125 million committed by Mayor Bloomberg two years ago. This funding, to support public and civil society efforts, will help governments, the health care sector, and nongovernmental organizations reduce tobacco usage and potentially save millions of lives. The American Cancer Society applauds the Bloomberg Initiative’s intention to focus on vulnerable regions, especially Africa, where the tobacco industry’s targeting poses a grave threat. The American Cancer Society recently launched tobacco control programs in both northern and sub-Saharan Africa in cooperation with Cancer Research UK. Along with similar global partners, the American Cancer Society has supported more than 200 tobacco control seed grants worldwide. In the spring of 2009, the American Cancer Society will co-publish a comprehensive, user-friendly third edition of the global Tobacco Atlas, a resource that was cited by Mr. Gates during the July 23 announcement.
