The Society sponsored a smoking cessation training with the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Hong Kong University in Wuhan, China, on March 31-April 4. The training was at the Wuhan CDC and included over 70 participants representing 39 agencies from provincial CDCs, as well as local hospitals and health departments. This was the third cessation consular training for China sponsored by the Society. The first was in Kunming in March 2006 with 29 people and the second was in Hong Kong in November 2006 with 35 people. Nine cessation clinics have started as a result of these “train-the-trainer” sessions. The faculty in this training including tobacco control experts from Hong Kong University and Columbia University, as well as Society staff. The Society will provide $30,000 seed grants for the participants of this training to continue their local projects. The next cessation training is planned for early August in Chengdu, China.
