The American Cancer Society’s National Government Relations Department (NGRD) staff met with advocacy professionals from Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society in London and Dublin to exchange best practices for cancer control advocacy. Dan Smith, national vice president of NGRD (who was also recently named president of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action NetworkSM) and Molly Daniels, vice president of Field Advocacy, discussed the critical role of advocacy in the fight against cancer with Cancer Research UK and Irish Cancer Society leaders. Key topics of discussion focused on advocacy infrastructure, policy development, and grassroots campaigns. The NGRD staff also met with members of the English House of Commons and a key government official with the Republic of Ireland to discuss top cancer issues facing the countries. American Cancer Society and these two prominent UK cancer organizations plan to leverage their successes and expertise in advocacy to strengthen cancer control planning in these nations and to share best practices with low and middle-income nations.
