The American Cancer Society presented the inaugural Premio Excelencia Latina awards to Latin American cancer patient support groups at an awards dinner on November 17 in Santiago, Chile. The event featured Colombian singing superstar Fanny Lu. She is a spokesperson for L’Initiativa SER, a breast cancer awareness campaign for Latin American women. The awards honor the work of an existing network of Latin American cancer control organizations, recognizing regional best practices in patient care. Winning groups from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela were selected in four categories: volunteer of the year, patient services, education, and networking. The selections were made by a Society peer review process on the basis of several criteria, including innovation, effective use of resources, demonstrated success, and potential accomplishments. Each of the winning groups will receive in-depth training and support from the Society, including a customized fellowship with a Society Division and financial support for their selected innovative projects for two years.
