On March 24, Dr. John Kelly, past president of the American Cancer Society, was honored by the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) for his passion in fostering the initial collaboration that led to an international partnership between the Midwest Division and the Jamaica Cancer Society. Midwest Division Chief Executive Officer Jari Allen spoke on behalf of the Society at the event and Midwest Division Board member Dr. Irv Lerner presented JCS representatives with a $7,500 USD seed grant to complete 2007 cancer control projects. Society leaders also joined talks centered on building the JCS infrastructure, including building Jamaica’s first Oncology Department and refining current interventions such as the Society’s Freshstart® implementation, which became Jamaica’s first publicly accessible smoking cessation program in December, 2006.
