California and Eastern Divisions Launch First Nation-specific American Cancer Society University in China

In September 2005, the first ACSU in China was held in Beijing. Because of the growing tobacco-related disease epidemic in China, this important training focused on building capacity for improved patient advocacy and tobacco control. National Board President-elect Carolyn Runowicz, National Board member Nancy Brakensiek and California Division COO David Veneziano led the faculty of this first-ever ACSU developed specifically for another country. Portions of the training were held in Mandarin Chinese, and the Eastern and California Divisions assisted in translation of course materials into Mandarin. Leading cancer control professionals from all across China attended this event, which was hosted by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA).

National Government Relations Department Hosts International Scholars at Advocacy Academy

In September 2005, 10 American Cancer Society University scholars from four countries attended the Advocacy Academy hosted by the Society's National Government Relations Department. Intensive advocacy training enhanced the scholar's skills and increased their understanding of the legislative and advocacy process in the United States. Scholars representing Argentina, Honduras, India, Nigeria, Romania, and Zimbabwe will receive additional follow-up training through a mini-fellowship hosted by the Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Great West Divisions. These mini-fellowships will be intensive, on-site learning sessions on tobacco control advocacy and nongovernmental organization(NGO) management. ACSU alumni from India participated in the Forum as advisors for the upcoming launch of ACSU in Chennai, India, in December 2005.
